In 1930s Trois-Rivières, during the golden age of choirs, a talented baritone dreamed of forming a male ensemble. In October 1936, Mr. Raoul Landry, a mechanic, made that dream come true in his garage. The first song performed was “Adoramus Te, Christe” by Ruffus. The Orphéon de Trois-Rivières was born.

In 1937, with the opening of radio station CHLN, a first broadcast concert quickly brought recognition to the choir under the direction of Georges-Henri Hamel (until 1940). After the war, the Orphéon was revived in 1945 by Léo Carle, who led the group for 27 years and brought it international recognition through tours across Canada and the United States. In 1953, the choir performed at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Over time, several conductors succeeded one another, and in 1979 female voices were added under Marcel Roux, ensuring the choir’s continuity. Since 1996, Yves Paul, Gilles Rioux, and Paul-André Bellefeuille have continued its artistic mission.

In 2022, Jocelyn Lafond became the ninth official musical director. Trained in Quebec and Belgium, he is a conductor, choir director, and holds a doctorate in organ from McGill University.

Since its founding, the Orphéon de Trois-Rivières has brought together more than a thousand choristers and remains the second oldest choir in Quebec and the oldest in Trois-Rivières, faithful to its mission of quality, harmony, and fraternity.

Don’t miss the Orphéon de Trois-Rivières on Saturday, June 27th, on the Chapelle Stage starting at 10:00 AM.
